To facilitate your stay
Take it easy!
Auroville is located in South-East India, so the climate is tropical. Anyone not accustomed to the heat,
dust and distances around Auroville is advised to go slow at first. Don't try to do too much too quickly.
Drink plenty of liquid.
Languages
Although English is the common spoken language of Auroville, communication in German, Tamil, Hindi and Farsi
is also possible at the Guest House.
Meal Times
Breakfast 8 to 10 am; Lunch 12 to 1.30 pm; Dinner 7 to 9 pm
Please order lunch or dinner in the morning.
Keys
Whenever you go out, please leave your key with the House Manager.
Quiet Time
Quiet hours in the Guest House are 10 pm to 7 am. Please respect this and keep noise to a minimum. Also
note our brick walls tranmit noise very well, so be discreet.
Room cleaning
Your room will be cleaned every day, unless you specifically request otherwise.
Bedshetts and towels
Any time you want a clean bedsheet or towel, just leave it on the floor in your room in the morning
and we will provide a fresh one.
Laundry
You will be provided with a bag for your laundry, which you should leave outside your door with anything to be washed.
We do our best to return your clothes as soon as possible, but please be patient. Also remember, that drying time depends
on weather conditions. Meanwhile, it helps if you mark your clothing or at least give descriptive list incase - as
occasionally happens - articles get mixed up with another guest's.
Valuables
You are advised to deposit valuables such as passport, air ticket, etc, in the Guest House safe. The management can take
no responsibility for lost or stolen articles or papers.
Living with nature
The plentiful insect and wildlife around you reflects a healthy environment. Help keep it the way - and clean, by not
dropping waste around the countryside. Meanwhile note that most insects and creatures you encounter are harmless. The only
advisable protection is against mosquitos, by way of repellant, specially from 5.30 pm onwards.
Exchanging money
Auroville's Financial Service (near Aspiration) exchanges foreign cash and travellers cheques Mon-Sat mornings 9-12.30
and afternoons 3-4.30 pm.
Living with noise
Many mornings around 4-to-5 am loud music starts up from the nearby villages. Much of it comes from the temples, associated
with festivals, but other sources are weddings and various other social functions. Use ear-plugs if you have them!
Paying without cash
As a number of units and services - like Solar Kitchen, Coffee Shop, Pour Tous stall and Snack Bar, etc - work on
a no-cash basis, you need to open an account with the Auroville Financial Service to facilitate payment.
Visiting Matrimandir
Equipped with a Guest Card, you can get an entry pass to the Matrimandir area and Inner Chamber - plus information
on timings, procedure, etc - at the Matrimandir Information Kiosk daily 8.45 am - 5.30 pm.
Road Sense
Auroville's roads are dusty, uneven, and at times full of erratic riders and drivers. Specially busy times for 2-wheelers
are around 8 am and 4.30 pm when local employeers arrive for work or go home respectively. 4-wheelers are most active around 2.30-4.30 pm
(when people come up from Pondy for the Visitors Centre and Matrimandir) and 5.00-6.00 pm, when the same people go home.
Drivers are often reckless, and it pays to be careful! If you are on a cycle, use the specially created system of cycle paths.
Footwear and flashlights
You are advised not to walk barefoot aoutside buildings, specially after dark, and to always carry a flashlight/torch
at night.
Safety after dark
Although Auroville is generally a peaceful and safe place, theft is not uncommon, and there have been occasional incidents
on the roads over the years. Women are specially advised not to walk or cycle alone anywhere after dark
Sun protection
Don't under-estimate the strength of the Indian sun. If you're not used to it, minimise exposure and use sun-block creams.
Dress
Noting that Indian women generally dress very modestly, Western women are specially advised to dress in a similar modest
fashion, in order not to send out the wrong message and attract unwanted attention. This also applies at the beach, where
one-piece swimming costumes are advised.
